Goddess of Rice

So as I insinuate about food. everybody is apquainted with rice which gives us life. But nowedays there are few people who grow rice by themselves. When I was young old people always talked to me about rice. So, I will tell you a rice story now.

There is a legend that there was a hen named "Suriyamanalee" which was making merit until enlightened and thus turned into Buddha. And then there was a lord name "Virupakka" who desired to be highly skillful and make rice fell down form the sky. The size of his rice was 7 wisps, same size of a watermelon and it was in goid color.

This surpised villagers and they wanted to ask a man of god who said that in the "Kusantha" Buddha era the size of rice was 7 wisps. in the "Kusantha" Buddha era it was 5 wisps. Then the villagers hurried to build a granary and the rice poured into it autormatically. The villagers then just only peeled the rice and cooked it so they could eat it.

There was an unmoral old woman who built her granary after the other people. Whilst she was building her granary a lot of rice was flowing in and fooded onto her body. She got so angry that she picked a log and hit in the rice cursing it. For that reason the rice scattered everywhere, some in the forest, some in the river. Coincidentally, a "Nai Thong" fish saw the rice and gave it the name of "Ko Sok", and the rice gave the name of "Nang Sob" to the fish.

After 100,000 years, in the era of "Kassa" Buddha, there was a rich man's child who put the net into the river to trap a fish. Unfortunately, a "Nai Thong" fish fell into the trap. The fish's husband, a "Kung" fish, took the rice to swap for his wife (Nai Thong fish) by telling the rich man's child that this rice was the most delicious food and effective against sickness. After that the rich man's child grew the rice and mutated it until the size was reduced to the same size at the present day.

Lanna people have worship for goddess ceremonies to appreciate, apologize and thank for the rice. Old people always instruct their descendants not to waste grain, not to tread the rice and not to curse the rice. If rice falls down you must pick it up. When you wash or pour rice into a pot you must be careful and gentle with it. Respect for rice will foster the way of Thai life and you will not have to starve and always have food to eat.

Therefore, Thai people must be proud to have food plentifully as the word goes in the saying "In the river there is always fish.. In the fiels there is always rice."
